A Montgomery company believes its name sets it apart in the busy information technology field. Business CEO Eugene Tinker, who holds 15 related certifications, chose Certified Technical Experts to communicate competence.

In a time when sometimes anyone who can move a mouse claims expertise in software, entrepreneurial CTE has grown from two employees to 19 by delivering it.

CTE tests, maintains and develops information technology and management systems for defense and commercial businesses. Tinker, from the Alabama town of Greensboro, heads the enterprise. He believes the company’s employees set it apart.

“Every employee who works for us is certified in their field,” Tinker said from his office in the Capital City’s small business incubator. “Hence the name.”

The company’s technical capabilities include project management, logistics support, web and software development, system engineering, document management and many other related services.

The entrepreneurial Tinker, who has degrees in industrial engineering, business management and computer systems, now is positioning CTE to become a leader in providing health care solutions to hospitals, medical practices and government agencies.

Tinker is making CTE adapt to a growing demand for health care services.

He said CTE is “connected” with Virginia College, Fortis, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Baptist Medical Center South, among others

But Tinker stressed he hasn’t forgotten his roots as business takes him across the nation. CTE helped a west Alabama high school improve its software, and the company donated 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to students in Sawyerville.

The CTE team also trains high school students during the summer. They learn about what CTE does and then work to earn a certification, with CTE paying the cost of that effort.

Tinker shared more about CTE’s work and goals.

What is your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge early on was being able to gain the contracts. But it’s all working now. We are a small, disadvantaged business, and the government has to give a percentage of work to small, minority-owned businesses.

What is some of your local work?

We have written software for a coursework-to-career site for the chamber of commerce. The software will allow companies and colleges to upload job openings for internships, both paid and unpaid. Chamber members can use it for free, and colleges can put resumes on the chamber website. We also have computer training contracts we fulfill for the military.

What are your plans?

We want to expand outside the River Region. We’ve won a contract to do work in Haiti for the (Center for Disease Control). We will be managing reports regarding a vaccination program in Haiti making sure vaccine temperatures are right, and helping to ensure the safety of the vaccine.

Describe your employees.

We have engineers, business developers, project planners and managers, computer engineers and software engineers.

How did you get into the medical side of the business?

We are able to hire medical staff due to our medical background in readiness systems. We hire pharmacy techs, nurse practitioners, doctors and others.
